Greek basketball chief arrested in match-fixing probe

Greek Basketball Federation President Vangelis Liolios was arrested on Wednesday as part of a major investigation into alleged match-fixing, illegal betting and bribery involving approximately 50 basketball games played between 2016 and 2026.

Liolios and four other individuals, including referees, were taken into custody following the issuance of six arrest warrants, according to national media reports.

The investigation, led by Athens sports prosecutor Apostolos Grammenos and the Organized Crime Directorate, reportedly covers suspected manipulation across multiple levels of competition, from youth and school tournaments to Greece’s top professional league.

Authorities reportedly seized €820,000 in cash from a referee’s residence in Katerini, northern Greece, while approximately €7,500 was found at Liolios’ home.

Referees and senior officials under scrutiny

The three-month investigation has also implicated referees and a senior refereeing official, according to Greek media outlet iEidiseis. Businessman and former basketball player Giorgos Mavraganis was reportedly still wanted by authorities.

Among those reportedly arrested was referee Vasiliki Tsaroucha, who had officiated a BKT EuroCup game between Türkiye’s Turk Telekom and Lithuania’s Siauliai Basketbol. She was detained at Athens Airport after returning from Türkiye.

Prosecutor Grammenos reportedly sought Liolios’ detention over concerns that he might flee.

Liolios has led the Greek Basketball Federation since September 2021. Greek media reported that he is expected to step down under applicable sports regulations once the charges are formally communicated to him.

The federation confirmed that its board held an emergency meeting on Wednesday to discuss the legal proceedings, adding that it would monitor developments through official channels.

Panathinaikos threatens legal action

Greek basketball club Panathinaikos issued a strongly worded statement following the arrests, alleging that questionable refereeing practices had persisted within the country’s basketball system.

The club questioned how referees had been selected for matches and expressed concern over officials facing serious criminal investigations. It also referred to reports that substantial amounts of cash had been discovered at referees’ residences.

“We will take legal action to reclaim what was taken from us by a corrupt system,” Panathinaikos said.

The club maintained that it had continued competing in matches officiated by referees whose conduct is now under investigation.

Allegations remain subject to legal proceedings

The case has drawn attention to the integrity of Greek basketball, with investigators examining alleged manipulation across a broad range of competitions over the past decade.

Those detained face allegations involving match-fixing, illegal gambling and bribery. The accusations have not been established in court, and the investigation remains ongoing.
