New European standards for drinking water materials begin in 2026
Greece’s Health Ministry is informing businesses about new European requirements for materials and products that come into contact with drinking water.
Under Regulation (EU) 2024/370, products placed on the EU market from Dec. 31, 2026 will require a European conformity assessment certificate issued by a notified body. The certificate will be valid for five years, with certified products also required to carry the prescribed European marking.
New rules cover water infrastructure
The framework applies to finished products, components and assembled products used in facilities for extracting, treating, storing and distributing water for human consumption.
Manufacturers will also have to use substances and components included on European positive lists for the conformity assessment. Applications to add substances to the lists can be submitted to the European Chemicals Agency.
National certificates remain during transition
Products holding a valid national certificate under existing hygiene rules on Dec. 31, 2026 will benefit from a transitional period until Dec. 31, 2032.
During that period, eligible products may carry either national or European conformity certification. After 2032, only the harmonized European system will apply.
The Health Ministry is urging manufacturers and other economic operators to begin preparations early to avoid disruptions in placing products on the market.
