New Democracy Party MP resigns

Varvitsiotis, who was first elected to Parliament in 2000, reminded in a statement on social media that he has been in politics for 24 years and has served in the cabinet 4 times with three different Prime Ministers.

Varvitsiotis stated that he sees the prosperity and future of Greece in maritime, as a lawyer specialised in Maritime Law and a person who has served twice as Minister of Maritime Affairs, and said: "My personal contribution to this endeavour cannot be limited to politics. With these thoughts, I resign from the parliament."

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a statement after Varvitsiotis' resignation: "He has shown a responsible policy in his (political) journey and served our party both as an MP and a minister. I respect his work. With today's decision, which I heard with regret, he proved that for some, politics is not seen as a lifelong profession."

Mitsotakis thanked Varvichyotis for his friendship and co-operation in political work.

In his 24 years in politics, Mr. Varvitsiotis has served as Minister of Maritime and Islands Policy, Deputy Minister of European Affairs, Minister of Maritime and Aegean Affairs and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.
