Man claims to have killed two, barricades himself near Larissa

A man has barricaded himself inside a woodworking shop in the village of Gonnoi, Thessaly, claiming to have killed two people.

The suspect, about 60 years old, called police, saying, “I’ve killed two people.” Authorities have confirmed the deaths, identifying the victims as Roma.

Reports indicate the suspect is armed with a grenade, prompting evacuations of nearby homes. Strong police forces, including special units from Thessaloniki, have been deployed, while three ambulances are stationed nearby but unable to approach due to the dangerous situation.

Local media report the suspect has a history of political activity with the far-right Golden Dawn party and previously ran for parliament.

The police operation is ongoing, with a negotiator attempting to convince the suspect to surrender. “I’m trying to convince him to stop, but he seems determined,” said Stelios Sourlas, the suspect’s lawyer. “He told me they deceived him and tried to deceive him again. He said he had sold them machines.”

Gonnoi is located in northwestern Larissa, near the border of Thessaly and Central Macedonia.

60-year-old suspect, who had barricaded himself inside his shop in the village of Gonnoi near Larissa on Sunday after confessing to committing a double murder, died by suicide after firing five shots at the scene.

Authorities reported that he first fired into the air with a Kalashnikov rifle before turning the weapon on himself. Police had previously evacuated nearby homes due to concerns about a possible grenade at the location.

The suspect reportedly confessed to killing the two men following a financial dispute. Bomb disposal experts were on-site, though no grenade was found to be a threat.

The two victims were confirmed dead at the scene.
