KKE condemns referral to Parliament requesting lifting of Dimitris Koutsoumbas’ parliamentary immunity

The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) has denounced the referral of a case to the Greek Parliament seeking the lifting of parliamentary immunity for its General Secretary, Dimitris Koutsoumbas, describing it as an attempted political prosecution. The case concerns alleged violations of party finance laws.

In a statement, KKE stressed that the action followed a complaint by far-right figure Konstantinos Plevris and raised concerns over the legitimacy of sending what it calls a “baseless and false” accusation to Parliament.

The party emphasized its strict compliance with legal requirements regarding party finances, including:

  • Regular reporting of membership fees, contributions, donations, and inheritances.
  • Public disclosure of annual financial statements, audited by certified accountants and reviewed by the relevant parliamentary committee.
  • Full adherence to tax obligations.

KKE noted that its only point of principle is refusing to provide personal data of members and supporters, which led to an administrative fine by the Parliamentary Audit Committee but never criminal liability.

The statement concluded:

“Those who believe they can slander KKE or hinder its activities with such known practices are mistaken. The people will continue to support our Party, which is unconnected to the corruption and illicit political finance prevalent among its critics. We call on all members and friends of KKE and KNE to respond to these slanders through the success of the ongoing financial campaign honoring KKE’s 22nd Congress.”
