Hunting season in Greece to open on August 20: Unlimited bag for 10 species

Greece is set to open the 2025–2026 hunting season on August 20, following the publication of a ministerial decision by Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou in the Government Gazette. The season will run until February 28, 2026.

Under the new regulations, hunters will be allowed unlimited take for the following 10 species:

  • European hare (season extended until March 10, 2026)
  • Wild boar
  • Fox
  • Marten
  • Wood pigeon
  • Rock dove
  • Magpie
  • Crow
  • Raven
  • Starling

The quotas for European turtle dove (trungon) remain unchanged, with a daily limit of four birds and a national seasonal quota of 36,000.

To monitor compliance, hunters will be required to record their turtle dove catches via a dedicated mobile application, provided by the Hunting Confederation of Greece (KSE). The app will track both daily and seasonal totals and will be distributed to hunters when they obtain their annual hunting permits.

Each hunter will receive a unique QR code granting access to the app. It will be available through hunting associations cooperating with the ministry, as well as to individuals obtaining permits directly from Forest Services.
