Greek fishermen strike leaves fresh fish counters empty

Professional fishermen across Greece have continued an indefinite strike launched on October 1, disrupting the supply of locally caught fresh fish and leaving many fish shops closed across the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace region.

Fishermen say soaring fuel costs in recent months have placed increasing pressure on the sector. They are calling on the Greek government to introduce fuel support measures and urgent steps to ensure the long-term sustainability of the profession.

FISH SHOPS CLOSE AS LOCAL SUPPLIES DWINDLE
The strike has led to shortages of fresh fish in local markets, while numerous fish shops in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace have reportedly closed.

Industry representatives said stocks of locally caught fresh fish at fish markets have largely been depleted since the start of the indefinite strike.

They also warned that a significant share of the fresh fish currently available on the market comes from aquaculture facilities or imports, urging consumers to check the origin of products before purchasing them.

FISHERMEN BLOCKADE FISH MARKET NEAR THESSALONIKI
Professional fishermen have also launched an indefinite blockade at the Nea Michaniona Fish Market near Selanik (Thessaloniki).

The fishermen are protesting the arrival of fish from Türkiye by some traders while fishing activities in Greece remain suspended as part of the strike.

Representatives of the sector said the protests would continue until their demands for lower fuel costs and concrete government support measures are addressed.
