Greece to strengthen security measures in the Evros Region
According to a report by Kathimerini, the decision aims to convey that Greece is “prepared and alert” rather than responding solely to migration pressures.
A senior official from the Hellenic Police (ELLAS) noted that border police, who previously patrolled mountainous areas of the Evros region, will now also be deployed around the Orestiada and Alexandroupolis areas.
Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis visited the Kastanies Border Crossing on Monday, where he praised the Greek armed forces and police for their efforts to secure the nation's borders, a move that has been appreciated by European partners. Chrysochoidis also referred to Germany’s newly implemented border controls, emphasizing that passport checks at Kastanies are being conducted in full compliance with international agreements.
The report also highlighted that the Greek government intends to expand the steel fence along the Evros border with Türkiye. Diplomatic efforts are underway to secure European funding for this expansion.
