Former prime minister Alexis Tsipras returned to the public arena on Wednesday at Athens’ Pallas Theater, presenting his new book “Ithaca.” The event marked an effort to reclaim his political narrative—blending self-criticism with appeals for unity—while signaling renewed ambitions for Greece’s progressive movement.

Drawing inspiration from Cavafy’s iconic poem “Ithaca,” Tsipras told the audience that “Ithaca is not a destination; it is an eternal journey,” using the metaphor to frame both his political trajectory and the broader struggles of the Greek left.

He stressed that “each of us experiences our own Odysseys and our own Ithacas,” linking individual hardships with the pursuit of collective social change.

Tsipras delivered sharp criticism of the current government, describing today’s economic landscape as one of “provocative wealth in the hands of the few.” He accused the ruling New Democracy party of perpetuating the policies that originally pushed Greece into crisis.

Reflecting on his own tenure, Tsipras asserted, “I am proud that we finally reached Ithaca,” emphasizing that his government avoided the corruption scandals that have recently dominated headlines. Copies of “Ithaca” were distributed to attendees at the venue.
