A new 3.1 magnitude earthquake occurred at dawn at Mount Athos. The epicenter of the seismic tremor, which took place at 04:14, is located 8 kilometers northwest of Karyes, while the focal depth is estimated at 11.5 kilometers.
This is another aftershock following the strong 4.9 magnitude earthquake recorded at 21:08 on Tuesday evening, with its epicenter 8 kilometers from Karyes.
The earthquake was felt both in Halkidiki and Thessaloniki, while limited damage was reported in the monasteries.
A short while later, in the same area, two more seismic tremors occurred one minute apart, at 21:20 and 21:21, one measuring 3 and the other 3.4 on the Richter scale.
At 21:33, a fourth earthquake measuring 3.2 occurred.
The president of OASP, Efthymis Lekkas, speaking to ERT, stated that the strong 4.9 magnitude earthquake occurred in the same area where there had been prolonged seismic activity that began 22 months ago and ended last September. “Without having any indication, we suddenly had the 4.9 magnitude earthquake. Caution is needed. The sequence is evolving smoothly. I do not believe there is reason for concern.”
