Communist Party reacts to 'US military bases'

The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) reacted to the US Congress' draft resolution, including the establishment of American military bases on the Greek islands and the expansion of the US military presence in Greece. KKE stated that this is a dangerous development for the Greek and regional peoples and argued that it is also against Greece's sovereign rights.
KKE said that the NDP government has historical responsibilities for this development and noted that the amendment passed by the Congress reveals that the ruling party is in secret negotiations with the USA.
In the statement made by the KKE Press Office, it was stated that the involvement in dangerous US - NATO plans within the framework of the US - Greece military agreements initiated by the SYRIZA government and completed by the NDP government has turned the country into a "bottomless pit" and turned the Greek people into a "target of retaliation" against the sharpening imperialist competition.
"It is clear that these plans are not independent from the Turkish government's demand for the demilitarisation of the islands and the promoted arrangements for the joint management of the Aegean under NATO supervision. After all, some time ago the Prime Minister himself described the Greek islands as 'NATO territory'."
The statement said that this development should serve as a warning to the Greek people and called for the cancellation of dangerous US-Greece agreements and the closure of foreign bases in the country.
According to media reports, within the framework of military co-operation between Greece and the US, the US House of Representatives approved a bill concerning the establishment of military bases on the Aegean islands. The bill must also be passed by the US Senate.
