Annual organ donation record broken

On Wednesday, the organs of a 41-year-old deceased donor were transplanted to six recipients at the Korgialeneio-Benakeio hospital in Athens.

The 99th donation took place on Monday, when the organs from a 49-year-old man went to six recipients.

“Today is a milestone for our country’s transplant system. A hundred great families agreed to donate the organs of their loved ones, allowing them, in death, to generously give life,” said Professor George Papatheodoridis, president of the National Transplantation Organization, said.

He added the 100 donors came from 32 intensive care units across the country, giving life to 225 patients.

In addition to donations from deceased donors, 106 living donors this year have provided transplants to the same number of family or friends, which is also a record.

Previously, the best year for donation in Greece was 2008, when 98 donors were registered, thanks to whom 266 transplants were made. The increase in the number of donors and transplants has been driven by intensive care units. As of mid-2022, seven local coordinators have been assigned to as many hospitals, which has helped increase the number of donor relatives consenting to organ donation.
