Academic qualifications spark controversy over official’s appointment

Newly appointed Deputy Agriculture Minister Makarios Lazaridis faces opposition demands for his resignation over his degree from the College of Southeastern Europe.

PASOK questions how he served as a ministerial specialist in 2007, when Law 2190/1994 required a minimum of a university degree, doctorate or postgraduate qualification

Lazaridis dismissed critics, saying he submitted all required documents. PASOK called him a “party favor” and demanded his dismissal.

SYRIZA also accused him of presenting a non-university certificate as an academic degree.
