Two new wildfires erupted on Monday afternoon in forested areas of Megalopolis (Arcadia) and Thesprotia, with authorities suspecting lightning as the possible cause.

Two new wildfires erupted on Monday afternoon in forested areas of Megalopolis (Arcadia) and Thesprotia, with authorities suspecting lightning as the possible cause.

The first blaze ignited in the Vedouritsa area of Megalopolis, where 37 firefighters, two forest fire units, 10 fire engines, two water-bombing aircraft and one helicopter were deployed.

The second fire broke out in Kerassochori, within the municipality of Filiata in Thesprotia. Efforts to contain it involve 22 firefighters, one forest fire unit, five fire engines, two aircraft and one helicopter.

According to the Fire Department, neither incident currently poses a threat to residential areas.

In total, 54 wildfires broke out across Greece between 18:00 on Sunday and 18:00 on Monday. Of these, 40 were extinguished at an early stage, as midnight 14 remain active.

The Fire Department’s local investigative offices and arson units are examining the causes of the blazes.
