New evidence submitted to Belgian justice in the Eva Kaili Case

The Belgian newspaper Le Soir brings the Qatargate scandal back into the spotlight, publishing new information suggesting that former European Parliament Vice-President Eva Kaili was present at the moment a bribe was handed over for the purchase of the apartment she was to share with her partner, Francesco Giorgi.

According to the report, the Belgian prosecutor’s office considers this detail a strong indication of money laundering, reinforcing suspicions about the source of the funds used for the real estate transaction.

The article also outlines the current situation of the couple:

“The couple continues to fight relentlessly—legally and publicly—to assert their innocence,” Le Soir writes.

On one side is Francesco Giorgi, former parliamentary assistant to MEPs Antonio Panzeri and Andrea Cozzolino, both accused in the Qatargate affair. After several months of cooperation with investigators—during which he consistently claimed his wife was uninvolved—Giorgi reversed his stance in 2023, now asserting that his earlier confessions were made under pressure.

On the other side, Eva Kaili, who has consistently denied any involvement in corruption or money laundering, maintains her innocence despite the large sum of cash found in her possession on 9 December 2022 and evidence pointing to her active lobbying efforts on behalf of Qatar, according to the Belgian newspaper.
