Amsterdam to ban meat and fossil fuel advertising

Amsterdam will become the first capital in the world to ban advertisements for meat and fossil fuels, following a city council vote on Thursday. The ban, set to take effect this summer, will prohibit ads for products such as hamburgers, diesel cars, cruises, and air travel on streets, squares, and bus stops.

The measure is aimed at reducing the environmental impact of meat production and fossil fuel use, including greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation. GroenLinks, one of the main proponents, called it “an important victory for the climate and public health.”

Similar restrictions on fossil fuel advertising exist in other Dutch cities. The idea was first proposed in Amsterdam in 2020, and a 2025 lawsuit by tour operators against the ban was dismissed by a court in The Hague.
