The European assessments of the EU agreement with Latin American (Mercosur) countries are general and do not take into account the structural weaknesses of Greek agriculture: small herds, high production costs, limited export scale and relatively low productivity.

Exporters’ representatives estimate it is still early to draw conclusions and what is urgent is the strategy for approaching Latin American markets, and strict controls on the imports.

However, due to distance, Greek fruit and vegetables are not threatened, while the abolition of tariffs will benefit exports of olive oil, cheese and mainly feta.

Opportunities are created for Greek wines and the service sector.
