Severe storms hit Bulgaria and North Macedonia leaving injuries and damage
Severe storms have affected Bulgaria and North Macedonia, disrupting daily life and causing injuries, property damage and widespread infrastructure problems across several areas.
The storm brought strong winds, heavy rainfall and hail, resulting in fallen trees, blocked roads, power outages and damage to vehicles, buildings and electrical networks.
Several cities affected in Bulgaria
In Bulgaria, the storm was particularly severe overnight in cities including Plovdiv, Sandanski, Blagoevgrad and Yambol.
In Plovdiv, heavy rainfall flooded streets and underpasses, while firefighters rescued people trapped in vehicles after trees fell during the storm. In Sandanski, three fires that broke out following the storm were brought under control.
In the Yambol region, strong winds and hail caused power outages in several villages. Authorities reported no fatalities or injuries but confirmed damage to vehicles and electricity infrastructure.
Bulgarian meteorological authorities issued a yellow weather alert, warning of continued heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and hail in several regions.
Storm causes major damage in Skopje
The capital of North Macedonia, Skopje, was also severely affected by the storm, with significant damage reported across the city.
Numerous trees and traffic lights were knocked down, some building roofs were damaged and power outages were recorded in several areas. Around 20 people were reported injured, with some receiving treatment for fractures and head injuries.
Skopje Emergency Center officials said several injured residents were hospitalized following the storm.
Crisis teams deployed across Skopje
Skopje’s Crisis Management Center reported receiving more than 1,000 damage reports through the emergency 112 hotline, with response and recovery operations continuing.
The Skopje City authorities and relevant institutions have deployed crisis teams to assess damage and carry out repair work. Officials urged residents to remain cautious, particularly due to the risk of falling roof materials and unstable trees.
