Earlier this week, authorities in Managua introduced an identical measure for Cuban nationals. Sources familiar with the decision told Reuters that the move followed pressure from Washington.
The United States—under both former Republican President Donald Trump and his Democratic successor Joe Biden—has repeatedly accused President Daniel Ortega and co-president Rosario Murillo, who is also his wife, of allowing Cubans and other migrants to transit freely through Nicaragua. Washington argues that this policy facilitated irregular migration toward the United States.
