Laylat al-Qadr 2026: Muslims observe night of mercy and forgiveness on March 16

Regarded as one of the holiest nights in the Islamic calendar, it is believed to be a time when Allah’s mercy and forgiveness are abundant, and prayers are especially likely to be accepted.

During this night, Muslims across the world intensify their worship, engaging in acts of devotion such as voluntary prayers, Quran recitation, and heartfelt supplication. Seeking forgiveness, sending blessings on the Prophet Muhammad, and performing dhikr — the remembrance of God — are widely practiced. Giving charity is also encouraged to maximize the spiritual rewards of the night.

One of the most recited prayers during Laylat al-Qadr is the Prophet’s recommended supplication: “Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni” (“O Allah, You are Pardoning and love pardon, so pardon me”). Many believers spend the night in continuous worship, using the hours to repent for past mistakes, pray for guidance, and ask for blessings in health, wealth, and family.

During the day, devout Muslims continue to strengthen their spiritual connection through dhikr, reading the Quran, and performing additional acts of worship. The night’s significance is rooted in the belief that the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad during Laylat al-Qadr, making it a central event in Islamic faith.

Religious scholars advise that even those with missed prayers should try to make up their obligations, emphasizing that the night is an opportunity for both personal reflection and communal devotion. Laylat al-Qadr remains a cornerstone of Ramadan observances, offering Muslims a profound chance to seek divine forgiveness, spiritual renewal, and closeness to God.
