Zeybek: We support livestock farmers in Eastern Macedonia-Thrace
On August 24, 2024, MP Zeybek from the New Left Party expressed support for livestock farmers in the Eastern Macedonia-Thrace region, calling for urgent government action to address the challenges they face. Zeybek highlighted the severe impact of a disease outbreak on small livestock farmers in the region and criticized the government's lack of an effective response.
In a detailed letter to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, Zeybek emphasized the need for immediate support for farmers affected by the epidemic. He pointed out that the increasing costs of feed and other inputs, combined with inadequate compensation for livestock losses, have left many farmers in a precarious economic situation.
Zeybek outlined several demands on behalf of the New Left Party:
Increased Compensation: The party called for compensation that accurately reflects the true value of the animals lost to the epidemic, ensuring that farmers' losses are fully covered.
Financial Support for Feed and Disinfection: Immediate financial assistance should be provided to cover the costs of feed and the disinfection of farms, which are necessary to prevent further outbreaks and to support the recovery of affected businesses.
Interest-Free Loans: The party proposed the implementation of interest-free loans under favorable conditions to help farmers restore their operations to profitability.
Strengthening Veterinary Services: Zeybek called for the reinforcement of rural veterinary clinics and the hiring of additional veterinary personnel to ensure effective responses to health crises.
Zeybek emphasized that in 2024, it is unacceptable for livestock farmers to feel abandoned and unsupported by the state. He urged the Ministry of Agriculture and Food to take responsibility and implement the proposed measures immediately to secure the sustainability and economic stability of the livestock sector.
