Zeybek calls for urgent support for wheat producers

İskeçe independent MP Hüseyin Zeybek has brought the economic difficulties facing wheat producers in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace to the Greek Parliament, citing major yield losses and low purchase prices.

In a parliamentary question submitted to the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, Zeybek said wheat production in many areas has fallen by more than 50% this year due to adverse weather conditions.

He said prolonged and heavy rainfall caused soil erosion, disrupted crop protection efforts and contributed to diseases that reduced product quality.

Farmers face rising costs

Referring to assessments by the İskeçe Directorate of Agricultural Economy and Veterinary Services (DAOK), Zeybek said producers are suffering not only from reduced yields but also from lower market prices.

He highlighted rising costs for fertilizers, seeds, fuel and energy, warning that wheat production has become increasingly difficult to sustain economically under current conditions.

Zeybek called on the Agriculture Ministry to publish official data on regional crop losses, introduce support mechanisms using national or European Union funds, ensure fair pricing and announce measures to reduce production costs for farmers.
