Xanthi (İskeçe) Mufti Office: “We will continue to support Xanthi Turkish Union with all our strength”

In the statement made by the Xanthi Mufti Office, it was stated that starting an investigation about the Xanthi Turkish Union march is not an acceptable situation and it is a great injustice.

In the statement of support made by the Xanthi Mufti for the Xanthi Turkish Union, it was stated that the Greek government, which did not listen to the calls of the Council of Europe for the return of the official status of the ITB for 14 years, constantly pushed the issue uphill and saw the insolubility of the problem as a solution.

The statement of support made by the Mufti of Xanthi is as follows:

“As a result of the legal struggle initiated by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) after the decision of the Greek courts to close the Xanthi Turkish Union because of the word “Turkish” in its name, the ITB was found to be right. However, the Greek government, which did not listen to the European Council's calls for the return of the official status of the ITB for 14 years, saw the insolubility of the problem as a solution by constantly pushing the issue uphill.

In order to protest this attitude, on Saturday, July 10, 2021, the ITB organized a democratic march in Xanthi, and the Western Thrace Muslim Turkish Minority participated in this march with all its institutions and organizations, shouting, "NOW ENOUGH FOR INJUSTICE".

Even though 7 months have passed since the march, it is unacceptable and unfair to initiate an investigation into the Xanthi Turkish Union march.

As the Xanthi Mufti Office, we will continue to support the 39-year legal struggle of the ITB with all our strength.”
