Western Thrace Turkish Women gather at the Iftar Dinner hosted by the Consulate General of Türkiye in Komotini

On the occasion of International Women's Day on March 8, the Consulate General of Türkiye in Komotini organized a special iftar dinner for Turkish women in Western Thrace.
The women-only iftar event took place at a local restaurant and was organized by İlayda Ünal, the wife of Consul General Aykut Ünal.
The event also featured a performance by the GTGB Women's Percussion Group.
Following the iftar, İlayda Ünal addressed the attendees, highlighting the hardworking nature of Western Thrace Turkish women and their strong commitment to preserving their traditions. She expressed her pleasure in sharing the special occasion of International Women's Day with women who contribute to and guide the minority community in Western Thrace.
In her speech, İlayda Ünal stated:
“Today, we have gathered to celebrate International Women’s Day. This iftar, organized by our Consulate General, serves as an opportunity to strengthen our solidarity and reinforce our shared bonds. Throughout history, Western Thrace Turkish women have preserved their identity, culture, and values with great dedication, passing them on to future generations. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all women who beautify the world with their efforts, love, and sacrifices on this International Women’s Day.”
After the iftar, the GTGB Women's Percussion Group performed a special repertoire of Yeşilçam movie soundtracks using musical instruments from different parts of the world.
The group’s instructor, Batuhan Hasan, provided insight into the newly formed, all-female ensemble:
“The GTGB Percussion Group was established with the aim of empowering women, fostering solidarity, and providing them with a means of artistic expression. With this vision in mind, we have created a rhythm group. Tonight, they performed for a special Ramadan-themed event in honor of International Women's Day. The chosen repertoire featured Turkish Yeşilçam movie soundtracks, but we have an exciting and diverse selection of pieces awaiting discovery and performance in future events. The GTGB Women's Percussion Group eagerly looks forward to performing for you again.”
The iftar program concluded after the group’s performance of Yeşilçam film music and songs.
Women who attended the exclusive iftar night expressed their gratitude to Consul General Aykut Ünal and his wife for their thoughtful and considerate gesture.
The Consulate General of Türkiye in Komotini also shared a post on its social media account regarding the event:
“On International Women's Day, we came together with Western Thrace Turkish women for an iftar organized by our Consulate General. We celebrate all women who beautify the world with their efforts, love, and sacrifices on this special day.”
