Turkish Consul General Aykut Ünal visits Büyük Derbent village in Western Thrace
Aykut Ünal, Türkiye’s Consul General in Komotini (Gümülcine), paid an official visit to Büyük Derbent village, located in Evros (Meriç) Regional Unit, on Friday, January 30, meeting with members of the local Turkish minority community.
Meetings with Community Representatives
During the visit, Consul General Ünal was accompanied by İbrahim Şerif, the Elected Mufti of Gümülcine, and Sedat Hasan, President of the Gümülcine Turkish Youth Union (GTGB).
Following the Friday prayer at the Büyük Derbent Mosque, the delegation visited the village coffeehouse, where they held informal discussions with local residents, listening to community concerns and exchanging views on daily life and minority issues.
Official Statement
In a post shared on the official social media account of the Consulate General of Türkiye in Gümülcine, the visit was described as an opportunity to engage directly with the community, stating:
“We met with our compatriots in Meriç/Büyük Derbent village.”
The visit is part of ongoing diplomatic outreach efforts aimed at maintaining close ties with the Turkish minority in Western Thrace.
