Three arrested over seven thefts in Rodopi

Three people have been arrested in connection with seven alleged thefts committed in areas of the Rodopi regional unit between Oct. 3 and 21, Greek police said.

The three Greek nationals were arrested on the morning of Oct. 21 in a settlement in Rodopi following an investigation by the Public Security Unit of the Komotini Crime Investigation and Detection Department.

Police said the suspects allegedly acted together, using a light commercial vehicle to travel to different locations and steal approximately 670 litres of diesel from three construction machines and two agricultural tractors.

They are also accused of stealing two water supply valves and breaking into two of the construction machines, causing damage.

Tools and suspected stolen property seized

During searches of the vehicle, the suspects’ homes and their persons, officers found various hand tools, two power tools, a metal agricultural tractor extension, a container holding 20 litres of diesel, six empty plastic fuel containers and two irrigation pipes fitted with sprinkler nozzles.

Police seized the items, some of which were identified and returned to their owner.

The vehicle allegedly used in the offences and two mobile phones were also confiscated.

Case referred to prosecutor

A case file has been opened against the three suspects on charges relating to forming and participating in a criminal group and aggravated theft.

The suspects are due to be brought before the Rodopi Public Prosecutor. The Komotini Crime Investigation and Detection Department is continuing the preliminary investigation.
