Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF) issued a statement upon the reaction of the "Spartakos" list represented in the Municipal Assembly of Komotini against the Turkish minority doctors working in the Komotini Hospital speaking Turkish among themselves and some of the female employees wearing headscarves. ABTTF stated that the Turkish community in Western Thrace was once again targeted through Turkish and headscarf.

"We will definitely not allow these and similar provocations of extremist circles to disrupt the peace in our region before the upcoming local and regional elections in our country and to target our community for their political interests," the statement said.

Regarding the issue, ABTTF President Halit Habipoğlu stated the following "The statement of the Spartakos list, which smells of provocation, aims to disrupt the peace and tranquility in our region by targeting Turkish and headscarf. As the members of the Spartakos list, who have grown up in the cultural and religious richness of our region, know very well, the majority of the population in the province of Rhodope are Western Thrace Turks and the most widely spoken language is Turkish. Therefore, it is natural and their most fundamental right for doctors and nurses from our community to speak their mother tongue Turkish among themselves. Regarding the headscarf, as clearly stated in the constitution of our country, everyone has the right to freedom of religion and conscience and is completely free to fulfil their religious obligations as long as they do not violate the constitution and laws and do not harm the rights of others. We will not tolerate these and similar provocations by extremist circles to disturb the peace in our region before the upcoming local and regional elections in our country and to target our society for their political interests."
