According to the report of the Greek Meteorological Office, the burned forest area across the two regions exceeded 720 thousand decares.
The fire, which started on August 19, 2023 in Dedeağaç (Alexandroupoli) in Meriç (Evros) province and the Rhodope Region of Western Thrace and caused deaths, was recorded as the largest forest fire the country has encountered in the last 20 years.
According to the report of the Greek Meteorological Office, the burned forest area across the two regions exceeded 720 thousand decares.
While a total of 4 million 200 thousand decares of land burned in the 16 biggest fires in the country in the last 20 years, the fire covering the largest area among them occurred in the Alexandroupoli and Rhodope provinces.
These fires were also included in the fire report published as the largest fires recorded in recent years on European soil.
