The Veterinary Services of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (EMT) have been bolstered by the addition of 29 professionals, including 19 veterinarians and 10 administrative and financial staff. This reinforcement aims to address increased demands due to the outbreak of sheep and goat pox.

The existing 41 permanent veterinarians have been supplemented with 14 veterinarians on 12-month contracts and 5 on 4-month contracts. Additionally, administrative and financial staff were hired on 4-month contracts.

In parallel, the process of submitting compensation claims for farmers affected by the sheep and goat pox and pest outbreaks has been completed in the Rodopi region. The Ministry of Rural Development and Food is expected to process payments by the end of January.

Nikos Foteinias, head of the Directorate of Veterinary Services for EMT, highlighted the need for additional specialized vehicles to support the services. Furthermore, compensation for feed costs is anticipated for farmers whose animals were confined due to containment measures aimed at halting disease spread.
