Storm hits Xanthi: trees, cars overturned
The heavy rainfall and cyclone in Xanthi at noon today caused fearful moments. Citizens were warned by the meteorology to be careful, but they were helpless against the power of nature. Heavy rain and storm caused damage in the city centre.
The rain and wind that started yesterday reached its peak with a tornado in the city centre of Xanthi. With the effect of the tornado, many cars were overturned and trees were uprooted and fell on the roads. The main avenues and streets of the city turned into a war zone during the passage of the tornado.
Even more frightening was the moment when a tree fell on a KTEL bus travelling on the Xanthi-Kavala route. Fortunately, the passengers and the driver of the bus were reported to have escaped unharmed in this terrible incident. It is considered a great luck that there were no injuries or loss of life.
The Mayor of Xanthi, while assessing the damage caused by the tornado, said that the cleaning and repair teams in the city were immediately mobilised and the damage would be repaired as soon as possible. Furthermore, Meteorological officials warned the public about possible tornadoes and severe weather conditions and advised them to be careful to ensure their safety.
This natural phenomenon in Xanthi reminded the residents of the city how sudden and destructive disasters can be and emphasised once again the importance of the authorities to be ready and cautious.
It was reported that heavy rain and storms were also effective in the plain region of Xanthi. Members of the Turkish Minority living in the region shared photos of the damage caused by the natural disaster.
