Solidarity rally for the Palestinian people to be held in Gümülcine
Four local associations in Rhodope are organizing a solidarity rally for the Palestinian people on Sunday, August 24, at 20:00 in Gümülcine’s central square. The event is being organized by the Union of Private Employees of Gümülcine, the Rhodope Peace Committee, the Rhodope Women’s Association (member of OGE), and the IKA Pensioners’ Union of Rhodope.
In their joint call, the organizations condemned what they described as the “ongoing massacre and genocide committed by the state of Israel with the open support of the US, NATO, and the EU,” stressing solidarity with those resisting occupation and oppression. They claimed that the number of dead has surpassed 60,000, mostly children, while civilians face starvation and lack of medicine.
The groups criticized the recent decision of the Israeli Cabinet for a “full occupation of Gaza,” describing it as an attempt at displacement and destruction of the Palestinian people. They also accused the US, UK, France, Germany, and other powers of hypocrisy for supporting Israel militarily and politically while presenting themselves as “humanitarians.”
The organizers further criticized the Greek government for its alignment with Israel and failure to implement a 2015 parliamentary decision to recognize an independent Palestinian state. They called on citizens to reject political forces that, as they claimed, support “imperialist plans” in the region.
Their demands include:
- An immediate end to all operations aimed at the occupation of Gaza
- Opening of all crossings for humanitarian aid
- Recognition of the Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital
- No economic, political, or military cooperation with Israel
- “History has a right side, and that side is Palestine and its just struggle,” the joint statement concluded.
