RUBASAM condemns the closure decision of Western Thrace Fenerbahce Association
"The closure of associations because of their names is an attitude that cannot be accepted in contemporary democratic societies and this situation is contrary to the principles of the rule of law," RUBASAM said in a statement.
The statement made by Rumeli Balkan Strategic Research Centre is as follows:
"We strongly condemn the decision taken on 28 May 2024 by the Rodopi Civil Court of First Instance of Greece to close down the "Western Thrace Fenerbahce Sports and Culture Association" on the grounds that the phrase "Western Thrace" in its name is against the national interests of Greece. This decision is a clear attack on the democratic rights and freedoms of the minority in Western Thrace. It is not only targeting a sports association, but also a blow to the fundamental rights of the minority in Western Thrace. The closure of associations on the basis of their names is an attitude that cannot be accepted in contemporary democratic societies and is contrary to the principles of the rule of law."
