President Sakelaropoulou addresses the issue of irregular migration during her visit to Western Thrace
Sakelaropulu, who paid a two-day visit to Western Thrace, touched upon the issue of irregular migration in her speech at the Dimokritio University in Komotini, where he was awarded an honorary doctorate.
Stating that Greece's priority is to protect the borders of the European Union (EU), Sakelaropulu said that the importance of human life should not be forgotten while doing so.
"The fight against illegal migration is a very important test for both Europe and Greece," Sakelaropulu said.
Sakelaropulu, who argued that Greece has an important responsibility on migration, said the following:
"This is not just a Greek or Mediterranean issue, but the responsibility of the entire European family in solidarity. In close co-operation with third countries, the European family must heal this open wound while remaining true to the fundamental values and ideals it stands for. The inhumane actions of smugglers must not be tolerated."
Sakelaropoulou also spoke about the summer fires in the region, saying that raising environmental awareness and ecological sensitivity is not only a priority, but also the core of politics.
