Greek authorities conducted an early-morning operation on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at the Komotini (Gümülcine) Correctional Facility, uncovering mobile phones in inmates’ possession, according to local police reports.

The operation was carried out by officers from the Northern Greece Organized Crime Sub-Directorate, with support from the Life and Property Crimes Division, the Information and Special Operations Unit, and the EKAM special police unit from Thessaloniki.

Searches, conducted in the presence of a judicial officer, targeted five cells, three wards, and a common area within the prison. Authorities confiscated six mobile phones with six active SIM cards found in the possession of inmates.

Following the operation, the Office for the Prosecution of Extortionists filed charges against six foreign inmates for violating prison regulations prohibiting possession of mobile phones, combined with charges of aiding and abetting.
