MP Zeybek submits parliamentary question following tragic accident

Hüseyin Zeybek, MP from Xanthi for the New Left Party, has submitted a parliamentary question concerning the fatal accident at the intersection leading to Kalfalar (Mirodato) beach in Xanthi.

Following the traffic accident on Sunday, July 28, which resulted in the deaths of two compatriots, MP Hüseyin Zeybek emphasized in his parliamentary question the need to review the region's road routes, intersections, traffic signs, and particularly the traffic density.

In his question addressed to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, Zeybek highlighted the heavy traffic in the region during summer months and called for urgent measures to address the traffic congestion in Xanthi's coastal area.

Zeybek urged all relevant institutions to take initiative following the accident, noting that similar accidents have repeatedly occurred in Xanthi province and at intersections along the coast, such as Kalfalar (Mirodato), Bulustra (Avdira), and Mandra.

The parliamentary question submitted by MP Zeybek is as follows:

"The news of the traffic accident at the Kalfalar (Mirodato) village intersection in Xanthi on Sunday, July 28, 2024, which resulted in the deaths of two (2) of our citizens, caused great sorrow and shock throughout the region. The other three people in the vehicle were injured and taken to hospitals in Xanthi and Alexandroupolis.

As is known, access to beaches such as Mirodato, Avdira, Mangana, and Mandra is via intersections on this road. Due to the traffic density, especially in the summer months, fatal traffic accidents have occurred at the same point. Unfortunately, to date, the relevant authorities have not taken any measures to prevent such traffic accidents (previously suggested roundabout or traffic lights, etc.).

This latest tragic traffic accident imposes responsibility on everyone. All relevant institutions must immediately take initiative and act before any further loss of life occurs. It is very painful that citizens visiting the region's beaches with their families over the weekends lose their lives due to inadequate infrastructure. We must remember that citizens living in the villages in the region use this unfavorable road in their daily lives.

Given the many traffic accidents that have occurred at intersections providing access to the coastal areas in the Xanthi region (Mirodato, Mangana, Avdira, Mandra, etc.), demonstrating serious issues and deficiencies in the existing infrastructure (traffic lights, illuminated warning signs, horizontal road markings, etc.);

Considering the severe consequences of recent fatal traffic accidents and losses in the Xanthi region and the necessity to take preventive measures to avoid further tragedies;

Given that one of the priorities and fundamental elements of a state is the protection of human life;

And acknowledging that gaining driving awareness is an educational matter for each of us, as well as a responsibility of the state;

The Minister is asked:

What permanent and urgent measures does the government plan to take to ensure the safe passage of vehicles at the coastal intersections (Avdira, Mangana, Mirodato, Mandra, etc.) in the Xanthi region to prevent fatal accidents and losses?"
