Meriç farmers reopen Bahçeköy crossing to trucks for Christmas
Farmers in Meriç (Evros) Prefecture said on Monday they remain determined to continue their protest actions over demands submitted to the government, announcing an increased presence of tractors at the Çirmen (Ormenio) junction and the Bahçeköy customs (Kipi) station.
Agricultural associations from northern Meriç (Evros) are scheduled to hold a protest rally at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday outside the offices of ruling New Democracy deputies in Kumçifliği (Orestiada), where they will present their framework of demands.
At the same time, the farmers called on citizens and local bodies to support their mobilisations, stressing that they have no intention of clashing with other groups of workers.
In this context, and in view of the Christmas period, they announced that the Bahçeköy customs station will be reopened to trucks from Monday night (Dec. 22) until Friday night (Dec. 26).
International freight vehicles will also be allowed to pass through the Çirmen (Ormenio) junction during the same period.
