It has been reported that Attorney Ahmet Kurt, registered with the Xanthi Law Society, and Ahmet Mete, the deceased Elected Mufti of Xanthi, will be tried on 20 December 2022 at the Thrace Court of Appeal with 3 Judges for "inciting the public to go against the law".

In the subpoena dated 12.01.2021 sent by the Thrace Court of Appeal in Komotini, Attorney Ahmet Kurt and the late Mufti of Xanthi Ahmet Mete will be tried for allegedly making written and verbal statements against the quarantine and measures implemented within the scope of combating the Covid-19 Pandemic in Şahin village of Mustafçova Municipality in 2020.

According to the court notification, the defendant Ahmet Kurt, in an article he published on social media on 12.06.2020, stated that the quarantine and measures implemented by the government within the scope of the Covid-19 outbreak were continued in the Minority village Şahin, despite the countrywide relaxation, and the people of the region were cited as the reason for the increase in the increasing Covid cases in the country. Citing the article he criticized, he will be tried for "inciting the people of Şahin to break the law".

The 2nd defendant, the late Mufti of Xanthi, Ahmet Mete, is on trial for "encouraging the public to go against the law", on the grounds that he spoke at a funeral in Şahin village in early June 2020, again in which he drew attention to the pressure applied to the Turkish Minority people and the political games played over the Covid-19 measures.

It has been reported that the defendants must be present to be tried at the Thrace Court of Appeal on the date specified in the notification (20 December 2022), otherwise they will be tried in absentia. The name of one of the defendants, Mufti Ahmet Mete, will be removed from the case because he succumbed to an incurable disease in July 2022 and died.

Speaking to MİLLET on the subject, Ahmet Kurt's lawyer, Yannis Barkas, stated the following:

In the case file, my client, Ahmet Kurt, is accused of "encouraging the public to break the law," according to the allegations. However, we believe that he will be acquitted by revealing the contrary in court. Because Ahmet Kurt did not encourage the public to oppose the laws in his written statement. On the contrary, it contributed to the calming of the environment and the common sense of the citizens in order to eliminate the tension.
