Kalantzis shows support for appointed Mufti in Xanthi incident

Greece’s Deputy Minister of Civil Protection Andreas Nikolakupoulos confirmed yesterday in parliament that an investigation has been initiated regarding the recent incident at Xanthi’s Çınar Mosque. Additionally, Yorgos Kalantzis, Secretary-General of Religious Affairs under the Ministry of Education, voiced his support for the appointed mufti, Cihat Halil, during his visit to Komotini.

Kalancis met with Halil in Komotini on October 30 and later spoke to the press, condemning the incident. He described those opposing the mufti as "citizens engaging in political activism against a person dedicated to a life of faith," making his stance on the matter clear. Kalancis emphasized, "Anyone has the right to pray in a public space like a mosque, church, or synagogue, and this right cannot be taken away."

This response follows the October 11 incident, where Halil was asked to remove his robe and turban before entering Çınar Mosque, as the community only recognizes the elected mufti. Halil ultimately prayed outside on a mat after refusing the request.
