July 15 martyrs commemorated in Western Thrace
A commemoration event was held in Western Thrace due to the “July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day”.

A ceremony was held at Turkey's Consulate General in Komotini on the 6th anniversary of the treacherous coup attempt by the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) on July 15, 2016.

Turkish Minority representatives attended the event, which started at 10:00 am in the garden of the Consulate General with limited participation, taking into account the Covid-19 measures.

The commemoration started with a minute of silence for the martyrs and the National Anthem.

"Mustafa Cambaz was the one who had the share of Western Thrace Turks among these martyrs"
Xanthi Turkish Union (ITB) President Ozan Ahmetoğlu started his speech by expressing his condolences to the Turks of Western Thrace due to the death of Xanthi Mufti Ahmet Mete.

Stating that the treacherous coup attempt of July 15 by the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization (FETO) was a milestone not only for the homeland of Turkey, but also for the wide geography, Ahmetoğlu made the following statements in his speech: “July 15 was an important milestone that caused us to learn lessons on many issues. We have seen that an organization that emerged as a religious organization has infiltrated the state structure, and as 2016 approaches, this betrayal has reached its peak. We witnessed how Turkish people acted in unity in the face of the attack against their homeland. This was another important point that served as a lesson. We have seen how dangerous our people's religious feelings, pure and clean feelings are when abused. 251 citizens were martyred on 15 July. Among these martyrs, Mustafa Cambaz was the one who had the share of Western Thrace Turks. Stating that the struggle of hundreds of thousands and millions who took to the streets for the sake of democracy and for the sake of Turkey will not be forgotten, I once again commemorate all martyrs with mercy and bow respectfully before their cherished memories.”

"During the treacherous coup attempt, we felt the support of our esteemed kinsmen," he said.
Then, Turkey's Consul General to Komotini Murat Ömeroğlu, who took the floor, started his speech by wishing mercy to Ahmet Mete, the Elected Mufti of Xanthi.

Ömeroğlu said in his speech: “For many years, members of the Fetullahist Terrorist Organization, which worked like a malignant tumor within the Turkish Armed Forces, attempted to overthrow our President and government with a coup attempt, and thus tried to abolish our constitutional order and establish a radical and fundamentalist regime in Turkey. Our nation stood against this treacherous coup attempt against Turkish democracy as a single body. Under the leadership of our Honorable President, our brave people wrote a history and said 'stop' to the coup attempt, for the love of Turkey. During the treacherous coup attempt, we felt the support of our esteemed kinsmen. On this occasion, I bow respectfully before the memory of the late Mustafa Cambaz, who was martyred while bravely resisting the coup attempt for the sake of Turkey's democracy. The late Mustafa Cambaz has become a symbol of the resistance of our Western Thrace kinsmen to the coup attempt.”

"Our struggle continues with determination"
Stating that the fight against FETO continues with determination at home and abroad, Ömeroğlu concluded his words as follows: “In the fight against terrorism, it is necessary to fight together without making any good or bad distinction between terrorist organizations. In this framework, our expectation from the international community, especially from friendly and allied countries, in this just struggle, is to strengthen global cooperation against FETO, a new generation terrorist organization. Because it is clear that terrorism can only be eliminated with a determined and common attitude.

Chairman of the Western Thrace Turkish Minority Advisory Board and Mufti of Komotini İbrahim Şerif made the prayer for the martyrs of July 15. Mufti Şerif, who made a short speech after the prayer, also wished mercy to Xanthi Mufti Ahmet Mete, who passed away yesterday. Şerif also commemorated the martyrs of July 15 with mercy and respect, and stated that a mawlid will be held in this framework in the Sirkeli Mosque, and everyone is invited.
