Iskece Turkish Union marks 98th anniversary
The Iskece Turkish Union, the first civil society organization established by the Turkish minority in Western Thrace, marked its 98th anniversary on 14 April 2025. In a statement released to commemorate the occasion, the Union emphasized both the pride in its historical legacy and its ongoing fight for legal recognition.
A LEGACY OF IDENTITY AND CULTURE
Founded in 1927 by members of the Turkish minority in Western Thrace, the Iskece Turkish Union has long played a vital role in preserving the community’s identity, culture, and values. It continues to serve as a cornerstone of cultural continuity and communal solidarity in the region.
LEGAL STATUS STILL UNRECOGNIZED
Despite its deep historical roots, the Union has faced significant legal challenges. In 1983, Greek authorities revoked its legal status and corporate personality due to the use of the word "Turkish" in its name—an act that the Union describes as an attempt to erase its existence. For the past 42 years, the organization has been engaged in a determined legal struggle to reclaim its rights.
Although the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled in favor of the Iskece Turkish Union, Greek authorities have yet to implement these rulings. The Union noted that this ongoing refusal poses a serious threat to the rule of law and democratic values in the country.
DETERMINATION TO CONTINUE THE STRUGGLE
The statement reaffirmed the Union’s commitment to both preserving its cultural heritage and restoring its legal rights. “On this meaningful anniversary, we extend our gratitude to everyone who has contributed to our journey. We believe in a more just future, where the injustice we have endured for years will finally come to an end,” the Union declared.
The message concluded with a celebratory note: “Happy 98th anniversary to the Iskece Turkish Union. Long live the Iskece Turkish Union!”
