Independent unifying initiative criticizes Eastern Macedonia–Thrace Region for silence on Gaza Crisis

As a humanitarian catastrophe unfolds in Gaza, the Independent Unifying Initiative (Ανεξάρτητη Ενωτική Πρωτοβουλία) has issued a strong statement condemning the Regional Authority of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (AMTH) for refusing to take a stance on the crisis.

While thousands of civilians have been killed, children buried under rubble, and millions suffer from starvation, the AMTH Region cited “lack of jurisdiction” as the reason for not responding to a resolution condemning Israeli military actions and calling for humanitarian support to Gaza.

🔴 "Silence is not neutrality — it's complicity"
According to the statement, the regional leadership chose political correctness over moral responsibility, hiding behind announcements from Greece’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and multilateral organizations to avoid making a clear condemnation.

The Initiative argues this is not a matter of jurisdiction but of conscience:

“This was a chance to speak out against genocide and humanitarian blockage — and they chose silence. Not out of ignorance, but by choice.”

📜 The proposed resolution called for:

  • Immediate ceasefire in Gaza
  • Opening of humanitarian corridors for food, medicine, water, and medical staff
  • Explicit condemnation of Israel’s war crimesSuspension of Greece–Israel military cooperation
  • Implementation of the Greek Parliament’s 2015 decision to recognize the Palestinian state based on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital
  • The Regional Council responded by saying such matters are outside its authority and not its responsibility to address.

📣 “We will resubmit the resolution as many times as necessary”
The statement, signed by representatives Stergios Iliopoulos and Dimitris Lymberakis, affirms that the Initiative will not remain silent and will continue pushing for the resolution.

“When children are starving, silence is not neutrality — it is complicity.”

They concluded with a powerful historical question:

“What did you do in 2025?”

A question, they claim, that future generations, survivors, and historians will ask — and one that cannot be answered with technical excuses.
