Gümülcine municipality receives European Mobility Week award

Gümülcine Mayor Yannis Garanis accepted the award during a ceremony held on Friday, September 4, at the “Riadis” Hall at the Thessaloniki International Fair.

The ceremony was organized by the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy as part of the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair and the event titled “Recovery Fund: Projects Improving Citizens’ Lives and Building the Greece of Tomorrow.”

The event highlighted successful municipal initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable mobility and improving accessibility.

Four municipalities recognized
The municipalities of Dedeağaç, Athens, Gümülcine and Trikala were recognized for their communication campaigns and Car-Free Day activities organized during European Mobility Week.

Garanis received the award from Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy Marilena Soukouli-Viliali.

The ceremony also highlighted Gümülcine Municipality’s previous achievement in the Access City Award program in 2021, underlining its continued efforts to improve accessibility across the city.

Garanis: “Our goal is an accessible city”
Following the ceremony, Mayor Garanis said that the recognition of the municipality’s long-term accessibility efforts provided further motivation to continue its work.

He emphasized cooperation between the municipality’s technical services, European accessibility programs and associations representing people with disabilities in the city.

According to Garanis, the municipality’s goal is to create an accessible city and accessible beaches for residents and visitors.

The mayor also called on residents and visitors to ensure that sidewalks, pedestrian routes and ramps for people with disabilities are not blocked by vehicles or other obstacles.
