European Minority Federation reacts to the disrespect towards Ottoman-Turkish artifacts in Greece

ABTTF reacted to the reckless and disrespectful attitude towards historical artifacts inherited from the Ottoman Empire by transforming the historical Murat Reis Complex on Rhodes Island into a music faculty.

The historical Murat Reis Kulliye on Rhodes Island, which includes a mosque, dervish lodge, martyrdom, and the tomb of Murat Pasha, who conquered Cyprus, was converted into a music faculty by the Greek authorities.

Regarding the subject, President of the European Western Thrace Turkish Federation Halit Habipoğlu (ABTTF) said, “The authorities of our country have transformed the Murat Reis Complex, which is primarily a martyrdom on Rhodes Island and a spiritual center for the Turks living on the island, into a music faculty, inherited from the Ottoman Empire in our country. Greece continued its reckless and disrespectful attitude towards historical monuments. Many historical artifacts from the Ottoman period belonging to Turkish foundations have been bought and sold on Rhodes Island for years and their original names have been changed and used for different purposes, as in the example of the Süleymaniye Madrasa. Likewise, a similar situation is experienced in Kos Island, and in Thessaloniki, where thousands of Muslims live, all of the mosques inherited from the Ottoman Empire are closed to worship and are used as museum and exhibition hall areas. On the other hand, even historical churches in our homeland where there is no congregation are restored and opened to worship. These two contrasting situations openly reveal the different approaches and practices of our country and our homeland in protecting the historical and cultural heritage, and our country should take our homeland as an example in this regard".
