The Encyclopedia of Western Thrace Villages, prepared by Rodop Rüzgarı magazine owner and writer İbrahim Baltalı, has been completed with the publication of its third and final volume.
Published by the Western Thrace Minority Education and Culture Company (BAKEŞ), the three-volume work presents all villages of Western Thrace in alphabetical order, based on their Turkish names.
The encyclopedia includes information on each village’s geographical location, the origins of its name, population changes from the Ottoman period to the present, details about schools and mosques, significant historical events, landmarks, local nicknames, place names, and accounts from the Bulgarian occupation years and the Greek Civil War period. The content is based on both written sources and oral history research.
As the first work of its kind, the encyclopedia will soon be formally introduced at a launch event.
