Eastern Macedonia–Thrace region issues warning: Exercise caution at Irish crossings

The Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (AMTH) has called on citizens to exercise particular caution at Irish crossings over the coming days, as dangerous weather conditions persist and water levels in streams continue to rise due to ongoing rainfall.

Irish crossings are locations where roads intersect with dry streambeds or small streams and are normally passable under regular conditions. However, following heavy rain, increased water flow can quickly turn these crossings into hazardous points, posing a serious risk of vehicles and pedestrians being swept away.

In this context, the General Secretariat for Civil Protection has issued the following self-protection guidelines:

  • Do not attempt to cross Irish crossings on foot or by vehicle when they are flooded. There is a serious risk to life.
  • Do not overestimate the capabilities of your vehicle.
  • Choose an alternative route, even if it means traveling a few extra kilometers, in order to reach your destination safely.

Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant, follow official instructions, and prioritize safety until weather conditions improve.
