Deputy Prime Minister Thanos Kontogeorgis conducted an official visit to Meriç on Tuesday, February 17, closely examining major infrastructure initiatives and holding consultations with regional farmers and local authorities.

The visit underlined the Greek government’s commitment to accelerating regional development in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, with a strategic focus on transport connectivity, agricultural sustainability, and workforce skills alignment.

Port and Border Gate Modernization in Focus
During his tour, Kontogeorgis inspected ongoing works at the Port of Dedeağaç, where a €24 million dredging project is underway to improve port depth. The project also includes the construction of a 1,500-meter commercial pier access road, aimed at enhancing logistics capacity and strengthening Dedeağaç’s role as a regional trade hub.

At the Kipi Border Crossing (Bahçeköy), he reviewed renovation works involving upgraded facilities and new control lanes. The modernization plan targets completion within 2026, transforming the crossing point into a fully operational and technologically advanced gateway between Greece and Türkiye.

Strengthening the Economy Through Skills Development
Speaking at the 70th anniversary event of the Evgenidis Foundation in Dedeağaç, Kontogeorgis emphasized the critical link between education, science, and labor market demands.

He highlighted the importance of identifying priority professional skills in Meriç and Rhodope, stating:

“We must support businesses with a skilled workforce that corresponds to real economic needs.”
The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that both young people and adults must be equipped with competencies aligned with local employment opportunities, ensuring long-term regional competitiveness.

Coordination with Local Authorities
As part of his official engagements, Kontogeorgis met with Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis to discuss accelerating infrastructure projects and reinforcing cooperation between central government and local administration.

He also held talks with Dedeağaç Mayor Yannis Zampoukis regarding urban development priorities, investment strategies, and municipal infrastructure improvements.

In addition, he met with Metropolitan Anthimos of Alexandroupoli to discuss social welfare initiatives and support mechanisms for vulnerable communities.

Farmers Call for Immediate Solutions
The Deputy Prime Minister convened with representatives of local agricultural cooperatives to address pressing challenges facing the farming sector. Discussions focused on production costs, sustainability, and structural support measures.

Kostas Alexandris, President of the Dedeağaç Agricultural and Livestock Association, warned that farmers are reaching their limits:

“We do not want conflict; we want solutions.”
Kontogeorgis reiterated that supporting Meriç remains a government priority and pledged that the region’s development potential would be maximized through cooperation, strategic planning, and determination.

PM Mitsotakis Expected in Dedeağaç
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to visit Dedeağaç on February 25 to attend the New Democracy Party’s pre-conference event. According to sources, he is anticipated to make significant announcements concerning regional development and matters related to the Arda River.
