Another West Nile virus case detected in Rhodope

According to the latest epidemiological report from the National Public Health Organization (EODY), 24 new cases of West Nile Virus have been identified across Greece.

Among these, one case was reported in the Municipality of Gümülcine. With this new case, the total number of recorded cases in Rhodope Province has risen to 5.

Previously, two cases were detected in Kozlukebir Municipality and two in Maronia-Sapci Municipality. The East Macedonia-Thrace Region also reported cases in Dedeağaç Municipality (2 cases), Dimetoka Municipality (2 cases), Kumçiftliği Municipality (2 cases), Drama Municipality (1 case), İskeçe-Inhanlı Municipality (1 case), and Taşoz Municipality (1 case).

Total 124 Cases Nationwide

As of August 28, 2024, Greece has reported a total of 124 West Nile Virus cases. Of these, 95 cases have shown symptoms of central nervous system involvement, such as encephalitis, meningitis, or acute paralysis. The remaining 29 cases either displayed mild central nervous system symptoms or showed no symptoms at all.

EODY Warning

EODY has highlighted that more cases are expected in the near future and has urged citizens to adhere to personal protective measures to prevent infection. As of 2024, West Nile Virus infections have also been recorded in Italy, Spain, France, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Croatia, Kosovo, Albania, and Serbia.
