Ahmet Kara: “Decisions to close schools are unlawful”

Ahmet Kara, Chairman of the Minority Schools Councilors Union, spoke about the unlawfully closed Minority Schools.

Saying that the decisions of the closed Minority schools were unlawful, Kara said, “The most important proof of this is that the Greek minority primary school in Gökçeada-Türkiye continues its activities despite the small number of students.
Actions for annulment filed against similar decisions in previous years have been dragged on, and we even have applications to the ECtHR on this matter.” he said.

“SCHOOL CLOSURE DECISIONS ARE UNLAWFUL

“Finally, I would like to touch on the issue of school closure. This is one of the issues that we attach the most importance to. In our meetings with the authorities, we were informed that they would enforce the conditions so that no minority schools would be closed.

However, in the newly published decision, we have learned that the activities of Yardimli and Tuzcuköy in the Rhodope province, Koruköy and Çay Mahalle minority primary schools in the Xanthi province were suspended due to the lack of students. We would like to state once again that these decisions are unlawful. Minority Schools can only be closed by the decision of the committees of these schools. This is definitely not a subject for interpretation.

The most important proof of this is that the Greek minority primary school in Gökçeada-Türkiye continues its activities despite the small number of students.

Actions for annulment filed against similar decisions in previous years have been dragged on, and we even have an application to the ECtHR on this matter.

We believe that the ECtHR process is of great importance and we follow the developments meticulously. As an association, we will continue our efforts to bring minority education to a better point within the framework of our possibilities.”
