A case of the smallpox virus in Rodopi

A positive sample for the smallpox virus was confirmed in a goat and sheep unit in Rodopi, specifically in the Municipality of Maroneia - Sapon. 

The relevant agencies have been alerted and the Rodopi deputy governor, Manolis Tabatzas, has called an emergency meeting today with the involved bodies, for the immediate actions.

It is worth noting that so far approximately 10,000 sheep and goats have been killed in Eastern Macedonia - Thrace.

As the director of the EMT Region Veterinary Service, Nikos Fotinias, emphasized speaking to ERT, the protocol of the measures against smallpox will be implemented, which is killing the herd, but also the creation of two surveillance zones, one stricter at 3 and a second at 10 km from the disputed unit. 

There will also be a ban on the movement of animals as well as animal feed and the slaughter of sheep and goats for one month.
