The 3rd Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (EMT) Forum took place in Alexandroupoli under the auspices of the EMT Regional Administration. The two-day event focused on the region’s geopolitical importance, economic development, infrastructure projects, and border security.

Key Highlights of the Forum

Regional Governor Hristodoulos Topsidis

  • Emphasized Eastern Macedonia and Thrace's strategic location as a trade, energy, and defense hub at the EU's eastern frontier.
  • Noted the region's growing geopolitical value, especially with increasing investments and partnerships with major global players.

Alexandroupoli Mayor Yiannis Zamboukis

  • Stressed the significance of natural gas investments in Alexandroupoli.
  • Raised concerns over rural depopulation, with European, Bulgarian, and Turkish investors buying properties in abandoned villages.
  • Warned of the “danger” of Turkish capital acquiring properties in the region.

Minister of Development Takis Theodorikakos (Online Participation)

  • Highlighted government efforts to boost Greek businesses' competitiveness and enhance exports and industrial efficiency.
  • Advocated for a new production model, integrating applied research and innovation to strengthen economic resilience.

Minister of Transport Christos Staikouras (Online Participation)

Announced a tripartite transport agreement between Greece, Bulgaria, and Romania to establish a multimodal logistics corridor connecting Northern European ports.
